Checklist

What to include on an electrician invoice

Electrical work is regulated, so your invoice should read like proper paperwork.

  • License number

Put your electrical contractor license on the invoice. Inspectors, insurers and property managers often ask for it.

  • Job site and scope

Name the address and the work, like 200 amp panel upgrade or EV charger install. It links to the estimate.

  • Labor hours and rate

Show hours and your hourly rate, or a flat price per task. Note if a helper or apprentice worked on the job.

  • Materials

List wire, breakers, boxes, fixtures and devices with quantity and price. Receipts back up the numbers if asked.

  • Permits and inspections

Add permit fees as their own line if you pulled the permit. Mention the inspection date if it was part of the job.

  • Emergency or after-hours

Label night, weekend or emergency rates so the customer sees why the price changed.

Guide

Billing permits and inspections

Many electrical jobs need a permit and an inspection. If you pull the permit, add the fee as its own line at cost, or with a small handling charge if your contract says so. Customers like to see that line, since it shows the work is done by the book.

If the inspector asks for a fix, decide upfront whether a re-inspection is on you or on the client. Write that rule into your estimate. Then the invoice has no surprises, and you avoid awkward calls about extra charges.

FAQ

Electrician invoice questions

Do I list my license on every invoice?

It is a good habit. Some states require it on contracts and ads, so check with your licensing board.

How do I bill a helper's time?

Add a separate labor line for the helper at their own rate, or use a blended hourly rate. Keep it the same as your estimate.

Is labor taxed?

In many US states, labor is not taxed but materials are. Check your state's rules.

Can I charge a minimum service fee?

Yes. Many electricians set a minimum for short visits. Put it in your estimate and show it as one line.

How do I handle a deposit for a large rewire?

Ask for a deposit to cover materials, then show it as already paid on the final invoice.
