How to number invoices
Every invoice needs a unique number that you never reuse. Numbers help you and your client find a payment, and tax offices expect them to be in order with no gaps you cannot explain.
A simple pattern works best: a short prefix, the year, and a counter with leading zeros, like INV-2026-0042. If you invoice in more than one business or country, give each its own prefix.

Can I start my invoice numbers at any number?
Yes. You can start at 1 or at a higher number like 1001. What matters is that each number is unique and the sequence moves forward.
Should I reset numbers every year?
You can. Adding the year to the number, like INV-2026-0001, makes a yearly reset safe because numbers never repeat.
What if I skip a number by mistake?
Keep a short note of why the number was skipped, or void that invoice in your records. Do not reuse it.
Do GST invoices in India have special rules?
Yes. GST invoice numbers can be up to 16 characters, must be unique for the financial year, and may use letters, numbers, hyphens, and slashes.
