Many places limit how much you can charge for late payment. Check your local rules and state the fee in your terms before you charge it.
How to charge late fees fairly
Put your late fee in the invoice terms before the work is paid, for example 1.5% per month after 30 days. Clients accept fees they agreed to up front.
Send a friendly reminder first. Many late payments are simple mistakes. Add the fee when a reminder does not work, and show the new total on a fresh invoice.

What is a normal late fee?
A flat fee or 1 to 2 percent per month is common for small businesses. Some places cap the amount, so check your local rules.
What is a grace period?
Extra days after the due date before the fee starts. A short grace period, like 5 to 7 days, keeps good clients happy.
How is interest per year calculated?
The amount is multiplied by the yearly rate and by the days late divided by 365. That gives simple daily interest.
Can I add a late fee without telling the client first?
It is best not to. Write the fee in your terms so the client knows about it before the due date.
